A citation is a "Name, Address, Phone Number" listing. Correct Citation building will help your local search results. You should be able to list these for free, just takes time.
I would recommend that you set up a different email just for the citations because listing your business on these pages will normally mean you will get extra Spam emails etc.
Building Citations will increase your viability Online. This has the unfortunate consequence of making your business more visible to people wanting to sell you things.
Expect there to be an increase in the amount of solicitations you receive as more people become aware of your business.
Make sure that every listing has the same format for "Name Address Phone Number" as listed in your Google My Business listing.
